Uniform Exchange

Uniform Exchange provide FREE recycled school uniform for Kirklees families.

Fun Exchange

Are you thinking about decluttering your garage, loft, or shed? If you find any unwanted, safe-working toys or games that would love a new lease of life, feel free to drop them off at the Howden Clough community centre.

Moving Mums programme

Moving Mums is a new programme of exercise & support classes for mums, new mums and mums to be. The programme is run by KAL. To access the supported classes, please enroll via this self-referral form.

We all know that physical activity is good for us, not only physically but mentally too.

In a bid to make physical activity accessible to everyone in Batley, Spen and Mirfield, the local Councillors have provided funding to support third sector organisations and volunteers the opportunity to build new skills to deliver physical activity within their communities.

Regular exercise contributes to:

- Increases confidence and self-esteem
- Reduced stress and anxiety
- Preventing the development of mental health problems
- Improving the quality of life of people experiencing mental health problems
- Overall physical health
– lowers risk heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and cancer by up to 50% and risk of early death by up to 30%.

Get involved

Walking

Walk leaders – FREE

Includes a short online E-Learning module followed by a 2-3 hr face-to-face workshop including practical walk.

The one-day course will qualify you to lead and back-up ‘Wellbeing Walks’. Wellbeing Walks are short group walks of up to 90 minutes for people who have done little or no structured walking, who wishes to improve their physical and mental health through walking.

The training day will cover:

1. Physical activity and health

2. Benefits and barriers to walking

3. How to plan, deliver and organise a walk, including route planning and risk

Assessment.

4. An introduction to the Walk Leader’s role

5. Practical health walk

MAGIC

Movement and Games in Chairs/Dance and Movement in Chairs - FREE

MAGIC provides opportunities for people to socialise, improve mobility and have fun!

This form of physical activity is ideal for those who live independently, people who are less mobile, or who may have memory challenges.

The course can either be delivered face-to-face (Approx. 6hrs), or mixture of online learning and face-to-face with a practical session (approx. 3hrs).

The training day will cover:

1. Physical activity and health

2. Benefits and barriers to walking

3. How to plan, deliver and organise a walk, including route planning and risk

Assessment.

4. An introduction to the Walk Leader’s role

5. Practical health walk

Jog Leaders

Leaders in Running and Fitness Course - England Athletics (Normal cost £170.00)

The course is made up of four on-line self-guided learning modules, remote feedback from a tutor of a supervised session and a 90-minute virtual classroom session. Further information regarding this course can be found online at: www.bit.ly/EA_JogLeaders

Cycling

British Cycling Ride leadership award level 1 (Normal Cost £135.00)

This course trains up confident and competent recreational cyclists to lead groups on the road in a safe and enjoyable manner, set mainly in urban environments up to a maximum distance of 50 miles.

The award qualifies learners to deliver guided bike rides for groups of beginner and intermediate level adults and accompanied children on roads and cycle paths.

The course covers preparing for a ride, group management, risk management, route planning and British Cycling's good practice guidelines. Further information regarding this course can be found online at: www.bit.ly/BC_RideLeadershipAward
